A brief History of Catholic Women’s League.
CWL was founded in England by Margaret Fletcher in 1906 and was established in Australia in 1913. It is now an incorporated organisation with branches in every State and the Australian Territory.
A National Secretariat of CWLA was established in Canberra in 1988 and has achieved recognition with the Federal Government through the Office of the Status of Women. (OSW).
CWLA and CWLA-NSW.Inc is a non profit organisation, which upholds the dignity of women and encourages their participation in church, social and public life.
With the launch of this Web Page we are hoping to enrol some Internet members. These ladies of any age will be able to read and write to this Web Page and support our causes by offering opinions, insights and/ or educational experiences. Internet members will also receive mail out information, including “The Vine” magazine 4 times a year.
Branch meetings are generally held monthly, often during the day, some branches have evening groups. It is possible to belong and support a group even if the meeting times in your area are not convenient. Another valuable contribution is made by prayer members, these ladies are often not able to get out to meetings, but are willing to belong and pray for the many causes that we support. Some members just like to visit and support the aged and shut- ins, do some cooking or some shopping for the more needy. In Catholic Women’s League there are endless options to live out our Faith.
Some women choose to belong to their local branch as social members. Not able to attend most meetings but enjoy the social activities of the group. Social functions including catering for Parish Functions and Funerals when asked are an important aspect of branch membership.
The community atmosphere of CWL Groups is achieved by women working together for the benefit of all, it creates a very special bond of friendship and caring. It can be wonderful for women retiring from the work force or moving to a new area.
We have a State Conference every second year and a National Conference on the alternate years. These are motivational, educational and friendship builders.
We petition the Government on issues that are important to the majority of the membership. We consider, as women we need to be concerned for the future developments in our homes, our church, our community and our world.
Membership to Catholic Women’s League is just a small Annual donation of $25.
